A setback is so frustrating!! You have been doing well for so long and beginning to see some results and making real progress. Then WHAM you’re hit with a setback that makes your heart sink. Your first thought may be to give up and go back to the ways things were, you think it all seemed easier then. Your mind starts trying to rationalize why you should give up on your goal. Allow me to warn you, if you stay in this space too long you might just give into that feeling and never meet the goal that you so desperately want to achieve. I am writing on this from my own very recent experience as I just learned a great lesson in business. What setbacks have you experienced when working towards your goals? Did you miss a day at the gym? Maybe you indulged a bit too much at dinner or you bought those nice pair of shoes instead of putting that money in savings or maybe you binge watched your favorite TV show instead of working on your business. Regardless of what your set back was there are some clear steps that you can take to get yourself back on track.
I would like to share with you my recent setback in business and offer you the steps that I took to get myself back up again. This past week I was notified that the business name that I had chosen was already taken by a company that has been in business before I stepped into the speaking and coaching industry with my company. Of course I respectfully and gracefully agreed to cease using the name I had chosen but in all honesty I was hurt. You know how it is when you invest your time into your goals and you hit an unexpected bump in the road it has a way of touching your heart like nothing else. I stewed for a moment and called my husband so that I could release the energy I was feeling and then decided that it would serve no value to me to remain in such a state of self-pity. I am wise enough to know that if you stay in spaces like that for too long it will hold you hostage and you’ll have to fight like hell to get out of that space. I wasn’t willing to do that so I decided to move in another direction that would be of value to me and my business. I want to share those steps with you today as you may be in a place right now that you need to get out of. I am here to encourage you and empower you to move beyond your setbacks. Re-frame your thinking immediately and realize that this setback is nothing but a setup for your further success. These 4 simple steps that I am about to share with you can be applied to any setback that you experience in life and become your plan against the enemy when it strikes.
Step 1: Get Still and Seek the Presence of God
Find a place, get still and get quiet. I am firm believer in the power of being still in the midst of what seems like chaos. Instead of being hard on yourself and telling yourself how horrible it is that you have hit this bump in the road decide that you are going to seek counsel from God. Ask him for direction and for the strength to move past the disappointment you may be feeling. During this time ask yourself for forgiveness and freely give it to yourself. Ask God to help you re-frame your mindset to a place of possibility and abundance. Then listen for that still small voice within you that has an encouraging word for you. Trust yourself and what you hear as a guide for your next steps so that you can move forward.
Step 2: Remember Your Vision and Goal for Your Life
Bring back to your memory the vision that you have for your life and the goal that you are working to reach. Bring forth your WHY and remember that this is the reason you need to pick yourself up and keep moving forward. By recalling the vision you have for your life it stirs up your motivational energy and gets your creativity pumping again. It is a great reminder that what you are experiencing now is nothing compared to the vision you have for your life. Remind yourself what the end result is going to look like when you successfully step into your vision and meet your goal. The vision and goals you have for your life are too big and important for you to abandon. Protect them with all your might by frequently reading your goals and recalling the vision for your life in your mind.
Step 3: Determine 1 Action You Can Take Towards Your Vision
It’s important to get yourself back in action because staying in a space of low energy and mulling over your setback isn’t going to help you at all. The longer you stay in a state of inaction the harder it is to pull yourself out of this space. So after you have completed steps 1 and 2 move immediately into action doing at the minimum 1 thing that will take you one step closer to your vision. If your vision is to lose weight and you have hit a road block then you immediately need to do something that will help you reach your goal, for instance go for a walk or run or put on some music and dance. Maybe you have been working on a project that wasn’t received very well by your peers or customers, get back out there and start researching on ways you can make it better.
Step 4: Reflect On the Lesson That You Learned
It’s important to reflect on the who, what, when, where, why and how of the setback and take note of what you learned. It’s important to take note so that you can glean the lesson that you need to learn. Life is about learning the lessons that come our way so make it a habit to reflect on your setback and document what you learned. It will serve you well should you come up against the challenge again and you will be able to share your experience with others thus adding value to those around you. Life is a journey and it’s always nice to be able to reflect back on our challenges at times as a reminder of how far we have come.
Keep pushing forward
Believe in yourself
